‘So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.’
(Galatians 5:16 NLT)
Walking in the Spirit isn’t about getting everything right – it’s about moving in the right direction. It’s a daily choice. A moment-by-moment posture of yielding, listening, and obeying. Not perfection, but progression.
You might feel like you’re not making much headway in your spiritual walk. But take a moment – look back. Even just a few steps. Can you spot one area where you’ve grown? One reaction that’s different? One choice that reflects more of Jesus and less of your old nature?
That’s growth. That’s the Spirit at work.
Sometimes, I get this gentle – but persistent – nudge in my spirit. It’s often inconvenient. Almost always counter to what my flesh wants to do. But over time, I’ve learned something: that nudge is the Holy Spirit trying to lead me into life.
And when I obey, even if I don’t fully understand in the moment, hindsight reveals the wisdom of it. Again and again.
Peace also plays a huge role. Scripture tells us in Colossians 3:15 that peace can act as an umpire in our hearts. When we’re veering off course, peace often fades. When we’re in step with the Spirit, peace settles in. It’s not just a feeling – it’s a signal.
But here’s the thing: walking in the Spirit will look different for each of us. God’s guidance is personal. The way He nudges your heart may be completely unique to your personality, your calling, your pace.
The beauty of walking in the Spirit is this: He will never lead you into sin.
That’s why it’s so vital we learn to hear His voice and follow. Our sinful nature is always pulling in the opposite direction – urging us toward compromise, pride, or distraction. But the Spirit leads us into truth, holiness, and freedom.
So next time you sense that still, small prompting – pause. Don’t brush it off. Listen. Follow. And then, later, look back. Reflect on how that moment of obedience shaped something good, protected you from something harmful, or simply brought you deeper into God’s presence.
That kind of reflection builds confidence in your walk. It sharpens your hearing. It makes you quicker to follow, bolder in trust, and more certain that you’re not walking alone.
Because you’re not.
You’re walking with the Spirit – and every step is sacred.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
