Read and meditate on 1 Peter 3:15.
We all have a way of knowing what to say if and when we are quizzed on why we believe in Jesus with such hope. It’s called our testimony.
Being ready to give an answer for the hope that we have is so vital as a believer. Not just because we are strongly encouraged to in scripture but because it keeps us humble and in touch with the state we may have been in prior to our salvation, and the circumstances under which we were saved.
Your personal testimony of faith can be a powerful tool in witnessing to others as it is very hard to argue with someone’s unique story.
You can, of course, have someone flat out disbelieve you but it is much harder when the narrative shared comes from the heart of a person’s actual experience.
For example, my salvation story centers around mental health and illness. I was suffering desperately with my mind when I gave my life to Jesus and it was this catalyst that – I believe – gave me the fuel I needed to walk into a Church building and encounter the One who could set me free, comfort me and rescue me.
Now, I could share a Bible verse with you that inspires me, I could share a powerful message that I once heard in Church one Sunday, yes. But when I unpack the truth of what Jesus has done for me personally, it will be hard for you to refute.
If I were to describe the state of mental torment and emotional upheaval that I walked into Church with that Spring evening in 2006, you would not be able to deny that something dramatic must have taken place between then and now as I stand today in a sound and right mind.
Jesus was and is my hope. I believe that if you are reading this devotional, the same is true of you and your life.
I encourage you as a Jesus-follower to live in such a way that your life reflects the hope and joy you have found in Christ. Keep a handful of stories of when and how Jesus has come through for you in your back pocket – metaphorically speaking. This arsenal of encouraging testimonies is the engine that can drive people to believe in the Jesus you profess.
Whether your story of salvation or testimony of life with Jesus from that point is dramatic or something that you would consider ‘ordinary,’ let me assure you, Jesus will send people across your path whose ears need to hear your story and will be impacted by your hope.
Father God,
I pray for wisdom and clarity in sharing my personal testimony with those who do not yet know you.
Use my story, Lord, to touch lives and cause me to never shy away from sharing the relentless hope I have found in You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Action Step: Write out your personal testimony, focusing on how you came to know Christ and the difference He has made in your life.
