Oscar's Story

Making Superbook Accessible to All

Translating Superbook into British Sign Language (BSL) is a brand-new chapter for CBN UK – one filled with joy, discovery, and life-changing impact. At the centre of this journey is Jay Thomas-Morton, a vibrant, energetic Christian translator whose skill in BSL has helped re-imagine Superbook so it truly becomes a resource accessible to all.

Recently, CBN UK’s Laura Boswell visited a church in Northampton to meet Karen and her son Oscar – two passionate fans of the series. Oscar is a young man with Down Syndrome whose condition has also affected his speech and hearing. More importantly, he is a follower of Jesus. Oscar loves the stories of the Bible, but because he’s unable to read due to his learning disability, he has never been able to access the Bible by himself. He has always relied on it being read to him and explained to him in British Sign Language.

Oscar communicates mainly through sign language, supported by spoken words, a method known as total communication. When he first discovered Superbook, something beautiful happened: he knew he wanted to follow Jesus. The animated Bible stories gave him the chance to learn Scripture independently – to see, understand, and connect with the stories for himself. Oscar shares that it helps him understand more about Jesus.

Having Jay signing in the corner of the screen opens a whole new world for Oscar. BSL brings the message to life. He can watch, listen, and truly understand. His faith shines through clearly and confidently: “I believe that He’s alive,” Oscar says with a smile.

Jay’s unique strength as a translator comes from his own experience as a Deaf communicator. His signing is rich, expressive, and full of movement – almost a 360-degree visual experience. It’s this depth and clarity that makes Superbook in BSL so accessible, especially for individuals like Oscar.

Just as God speaks to Karen through Scripture, He speaks to Oscar through Superbook. The impact has been so significant that Karen and Oscar nominated CBN UK for a Luke 5 Award, given by Christian disability charity Through the Roof. The award celebrates ministries that go above and beyond to make the Gospel accessible. Receiving this honour meant the world to us – and it’s a milestone we share with every Founder, Partner, and Supporter who has helped make this possible.

Through the Roof CEO Tim Wood said: “This award celebrates the incredible impact of making the Good News accessible to everyone. CBN UK’s work with Superbook has opened the door for people like Oscar – and many others in the Deaf community – to engage with the Word of God in a deeply personal way.”

Karen and Oscar hope – and we agree wholeheartedly – that every season of Superbook will one day be available in BSL. The more accessible biblical content we can produce, the more widely the Gospel can be shared.

Oscar puts it beautifully: “That will help them learn a bit more about Him (Jesus).”

Oscar especially loves the songs because they help him understand the Bible even more.

Superbook in British Sign Language is not just a translation – it’s a lifeline. It creates a bridge for children and adults with communication challenges, offering them the chance to meet Jesus in a way that speaks directly to their world.

To all our CBN UK Founders, Donors, and Supporters: thank you. Your generosity is making the Gospel accessible to those who might otherwise struggle to engage with it. We could not do this without you.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
