Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with Mark Ritchie – evangelist, storyteller, podcaster, and comedian – to talk through his personal testimony, his passion for evangelism through creative arts, and his upcoming Fringe show, “He Just Can’t Help Himself”, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2025.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:7-8
Mark shared how a lifetime of seeking purpose led him to faith in Christ. His testimony blends vulnerability and humour: talking of failure, identity, and redemption in a way that resonates deeply. What began as a personal journey transformed into public ministry, fuelled by storytelling shaped to spark questions, confront hurts, and invite hope.
Over the years, Mark has toured globally, using humour and narrative to connect with people outside traditional church spaces. Now he brings that approach to the Fringe, bringing gospel’s narrative to unexpected crowds.
Mark emphasised the vital role of creativity in the church’s life and mission:
Mark’s new one-man show “He Just Can’t Help Himself” is scheduled for six performances at the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Lime Studio at George Street, across the first week of August (4–9 August), nightly at 19:40 £5 tickets)
It promises a tight, family-friendly mix of comedy and spiritual reflection – cheap full-fringe access to a gospel-framed theatre experience. Mark’s style is unpretentious yet intentional, inviting laughter and then pausing the room as deeper themes surface.
Mark believes the Church has a beautiful opportunity to rediscover the power of creativity – not just as a form of entertainment, but as a deeply meaningful way to share the Gospel. Through storytelling, vulnerability, and imagination, creative expression can open hearts in ways that traditional formats sometimes can’t. His work demonstrates how the arts can make space for honest questions, deeper connection, and moments where people truly encounter the love of Jesus.
Mark Ritchie’s new one-man show, “He Just Can’t Help Himself,” blends comedy, faith, and raw honesty in a way that resonates beyond the stage. It’s more than entertainment – it’s a fresh expression of the Gospel that invites laughter, reflection, and hope.
Whether you’re exploring creative outreach or just looking for something meaningful at the Fringe, this show is not to be missed.
