A Place to Belong: The Heart Behind Liberty Church’s Food Coop

When we visited Liberty Church in Newport, it was a delightful experience to witness the thriving sense of community that is so deeply embedded within the church’s mission and activities. One of the standout initiatives that epitomises this community spirit is the Food Co-op, which began with the goal of supporting families in need. Over the years, however, it has grown into much more than just a place for food—it’s become a true extension of the church’s heart for its community.

We had the privilege of meeting Alice, the manager of the Food Co-op, who welcomed us into her home to share her insights into how this initiative has evolved. Alice’s passion for serving the community is evident in everything she does. What began as a resource for families facing financial hardship has blossomed into a space where deeper, more meaningful connections are formed.

Alice shared a moving story of one individual who initially visited the Food Co-op quietly, keeping to himself. However, over time, with the addition of coffee and a welcoming space to converse, this individual gradually opened up. Through simple gestures of kindness and a non-judgmental space, he started to feel valued and recognised as part of the community. Alice’s ability to connect with people, listen, and offer a place for them to be heard is what truly makes the Food Co-op a safe haven for all.

Alice’s background in mental health and creative arts plays a significant role in the impact she’s able to have within the Food Co-op. Her deep empathy and understanding of people’s emotional and psychological needs allow her to support individuals in ways that go beyond just providing food. For many, the Food Co-op offers more than groceries; it provides a sense of belonging, a place to chat, and a refuge for those going through tough times. Alice’s heart for people shines through her work, and it is clear that her efforts are an essential part of the church’s mission to serve the community.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Building Community and Faith: Liberty Church’s Growing Influence

Gareth, an Elder in the church, further affirmed the positive influence Alice has had on the Food Co-op and beyond. He shared how God’s hand has been evident in the development and growth of the initiative, especially in terms of the relationships being built and the broader impact on the community.

Gaz, as he’s affectionately known, also expressed his excitement about the wider work that Liberty Church is doing in Newport. One key initiative has been the church’s involvement in schools. The use of CBN’s Superbook, a programme that introduces children to biblical stories, has been particularly valuable. But perhaps most heartening has been the revival of hymns and Bible truth in school assemblies. This practice, which has faded in schools over the years, has been met with overwhelming positivity from the teachers, many of whom recall their own childhood Christian assemblies with fondness.

More than just an educational tool, these assemblies have become a powerful moment of connection for both children and staff, and hearing children sing praises to Jesus has been a moving experience for everyone involved.

For the schools, it has been a return to something they had lost. For the church, it has been a chance to reach the next generation and remind them of the importance of faith, community, and truth.

Overall, our visit to Liberty Church was a reminder of the profound impact that a church can have on its community when it prioritises people and relationships. Through initiatives like the Food Co-op and the church’s work in schools, Liberty Church is not just meeting practical needs but also fostering an environment where individuals can grow spiritually, emotionally, and socially. The love and care that radiate from Alice, Gareth, and the church community are truly transforming Newport, one connection at a time.
